From Autunite to Uraninite: Building the Ions and Ozone Collection
May 27th 2026
Welcome to Ions and Ozone
Thank you for taking the time to explore my website and for joining me in a hobby that has become a true passion of mine.
It all started with a simple piece of uranium glass shaped like a sea star. There was something captivating about that mysterious ultraviolet glow. When I later learned that the fluorescence came from excited electrons releasing energy as they returned to their normal state, it made the experience even more fascinating. Science has a way of turning curiosity into wonder.
I am a high school science teacher certified in Chemistry, Physics, and Biology. I began my second career as a teacher in my early fifties, and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. My passion for learning is only surpassed by my passion for teaching. Over the years, my interests have expanded from radioactive curiosities to lasers, vacuum tubes, and vintage high-voltage scientific apparatus.
One of my favorite parts of teaching is connecting science to history and modern technology — showing students not only how something works, but where it came from and why it still matters today.
My journey collecting NORM specimens and unique radioactive curiosities began later in life, but it quickly became much more than a hobby. It introduced me to some truly incredible people and led to friendships that I know will last a lifetime. Around every corner is a new adventure, a new specimen, and a new story waiting to be discovered.
Life gives all of us challenges and opportunities. We can dwell on difficulties, or we can turn them into something meaningful. I firmly believe that growth comes from curiosity, resilience, and helping others along the way. That, to me, is what makes life truly rewarding.
It was not until my late forties that I realized my passion for learning was truly unquenchable. The more I learned, the more I realized how much there still was to discover. I often revisit concepts and relearn things because repetition builds understanding. True learning happens when knowledge connects with real experiences, and teaching reinforces those connections every day.
I hope you find that special mineral or scientific curiosity that sparks your own fascination. It often starts with just one piece, and before long you discover an entire world filled with history, science, and remarkable people. The friendships you build and the conversations you inspire along the way are truly priceless.
Thank you for visiting, and I hope you enjoy this hobby as much as I do.
